London's recycling rates are lagging behind the rest of the country

5 June 2021

Only 33.5% of London’s local authority collected waste is recycled or composted. This is the worst rate in all of England and in the borough of Harrow it is only 38.8%.  View the full Government statistics 'Local authority collected waste generation from April 2000 to March 2020 (England and regions) and local authority data April 2019 to March 2020' (third spreadsheet down).

In April, Green Party London Assembly Member Caroline Russell gave the Mayor Sadiq Khan the opportunity to commit to making London a zero waste city by asking him a direct question on this, which he refused to agree to.

Getting to zero waste by 2030 would make our city healthier and more resilient at the same time as creating new sustainable jobs in London. We need elected representatives who we can trust and who will commit to taking the urgent action needed.
